Omar Mahfoudi Artist Statement Art is mahfojdi self-therapy through which I explore unrelentingly my unknown nature. I started drawing before I knew how to write and before I knew what art was. It was something that came naturally to me and allowed me to explore other images and destinies than were given to me by my society, such as orientalist visions of the self, or ending up on the street or unemployed.

Through painting, photography and video, I try to reinvent and rewrite the history of the human being through emotions. I come from a culture in which representational art is prohibited.

The body is constantly at the fore mahfouudi my vision, and especially bodies in motion, in the process of creation. At the same time, in my culture, we are not allowed to question our own existence, because the story of religion explains everything, and religious law dictates how we live our lives. In my work, I pose philosophical and existential questions.

I started drawing when Mahfludi was very young and when I turned eighteen I started exploring different styles of painting until I found my own vocabulary of images without any teachers but the great painters I learned about through books some Europeans who liked my work brought me from Europe because the books were not available in Tangier.

I initially used video to explore the political situation in my hometown through a documentary project I made in about the local elections.

I found that it mshfoudi me to make a reconciliation with what is real, whereas my painting only allowed me to represent the emotional and imaginative side of my life. I made short documentaries about the people and environment around me: Through my friendships with people around me, I gain their confidence and the screenplay becomes already written between us without my imposed intervention.
